Remove wrinkles from aging, gravity and sun exposure

Who is a candidate?
Men or women who have developed wrinkles and drooping of the skin and soft tissues of the face and neck due to aging, gravity, and sun exposure may be good candidates for a facelift. A facelift does not correct drooping of the forehead and eyelids. However, these can be corrected at the same time as your facelift with additional procedures (browlift, eyelid lift). Very fine wrinkles around the eyes and mouth are not corrected by a facelift, but may be addressed with other techniques.

How is a facelift performed?
Incisions are carefully hidden around the ear and in the hairline behind the ear. An additional incision under the chin may be required if the neck also needs tightening. The skin of the face and neck is then lifted and redraped to smooth out any wrinkles and creases. The excess skin is removed and the underlying muscles are tightened to create a more youthful contour.

The surgery can be performed under either a local or a general anaesthetic. If it is done under local, it is possible to go home the same day. If a general anaesthetic is used, an overnight stay is recommended. The surgery takes approximately four to five hours, but may be longer if combined with other procedures.

What is the recovery period like?
You will be up and about immediately after surgery. Swelling, bruising and discomfort after surgery are normal for a few days. Dr. Hynes will prescribe pain medication for you, as well as antibiotics to minimize the chances of infection. You will be able to shower within a few days. The stitches are removed in the office in the first week after surgery. Small surgical drains are usually placed during the procedure and these are removed within one or two days.

Depending on your type of work, you may return within two weeks of surgery. Any residual bruising can be covered with light makeup. Although the skin will be healed within a week or so, it will be three or four weeks until full activities can be resumed (i.e., sports or heavy lifting).

What are the risks?
All surgery carries certain risks and a facelift is no exception. These include bleeding, infection and temporary skin numbness. Delayed skin healing can occur, but this is most likely in smokers; therefore you must stop smoking before undergoing a facelift. The scars normally fade with time, but do not disappear completely. However, they can be easily concealed with light makeup. Dr. Hynes will review all the risks of the surgery with you in detail during your cosmetic consultation.
