Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast augmentations are one of the most popular types of cosmetic breast surgeries. They are relatively straightforward procedures whereby implants are placed over or under the chest muscle to enhance the appearance, size, or contour of the breasts. The Lotus Cosmetic Surgery Centre and Medispa in Hamilton and Burlington specializes in lasting breast augmentation procedures performed in our state-of-the-art medical facility.
Who is a candidate?
Breasts can lose volume and shape after weight loss, childbirth or as a result of aging. Some women have naturally smaller breasts as a result of their genetics. Breast augmentation can successfully and safely enhance both the size and shape of the breasts. In some cases, a breast lift can be done in combination with augmentation to give the best possible appearance.
How is breast augmentation performed?
Cohesive gel implants are primarily used for breast augmentation. Small incisions are placed in the fold beneath the breast or around the nipple. The implants are then inserted beneath the pectoral muscle or, in some cases, beneath the breast tissue itself.
The surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic, but you will be able to go home immediately after surgery; an overnight stay is not required. The surgery takes approximately 1 ½ hours.
How much does breast augmentation surgery cost?
Breast augmentation surgeries vary in price depending on which province you live in. In Ontario, the average cost of a breast augmentation is between $7,500 and $11,000. How to choose a breast implant size?
The size of your breast implants is an important decision. When making this choice, we recommend that all patients consider the following: their natural body shape and frame size, the shape and size of their natural breasts, the look you want your new breasts to have (for example, do you want a subtle or dramatic change?), whether your breasts are currently sagging or drooping, and finally, what kinds of physical activities you enjoy doing (if you have a very active lifestyle and enjoy high-intensity exercise, larger implants may be uncomfortable or disruptive).
How do I prepare for a breast augmentation procedure?
There are several ways to prepare for your breast augmentation procedure. Two weeks before the surgery, you should stop smoking or drinking alcohol, stop taking all blood thinner medications, have your blood work done (if requested by your doctor), and make arrangements for someone to pick you up after your procedure. On the night before your procedure, do not eat or drink anything (including water). Finally, on the day of, arrive at the medical facility two hours prior to your surgery to allow yourself the necessary time to get checked in and take any medication.
What is the recovery period like?
Swelling and discomfort after surgery are normal for a few days. Dr. Hynes will prescribe pain medication for you, as well as antibiotics to minimize the chances of infection. You will be able to shower within less than a week. The stitches are hidden below the surface of the skin and will be absorbed by the body.
Depending on your type of work, you may return within less than two weeks of surgery. Although the skin will be healed within a week or so, it will be three or four weeks until full activities can be resumed (i.e., sports or heavy lifting).
How long do breast implants last?
Breast implants are designed to last anywhere from 10 to 15 years, however, many can last upwards of 20 years. The rule of thumb is that the chance of rupturing your implants goes up by 1 percent each year, so the older they are, the greater your chance of rupture. If you don’t notice any concerns, then there’s generally no need to change or replace implants, but some women feel more comfortable automatically replacing them every decade or decade and a half. It’s really up to you, but at a minimum, your breast implants should last ten years.

What are the risks?
All surgery carries certain risks and breast augmentation surgery is no exception. These include bleeding, infection, changes in nipple sensation, and “contracture” or scarring around the implant. Fortunately, most of these complications are rare. Dr. Hynes will review all the risks of breast augmentation with you in detail during your cosmetic consultation.
Is it possible to breastfeed after receiving breast implants?
The answer to this question is yes, it is possible to breastfeed after receiving implants. In most cases, implants do not affect a woman’s ability to lactate or breastfeed. This is because, during breast augmentation surgery, implants are placed between the chest wall and the breast and therefore do not interfere with the breast ducts or mammary glands from which the milk is secreted. That said, we recommend speaking directly with your doctor or a lactation specialist about any concerns related to breastfeeding.
How can I obtain more information?
It’s important to have realistic expectations and to be properly informed about expected results and potential side effects, with any procedure.
