Nose Surgery & Rhinoplasty
Who is a candidate?
Cosmetic rhinoplasty is surgery to reshape your nose and improve its aesthetic (cosmetic) appearance. It can increase or decrease the size of your nose. The procedure can address specific concerns related to the tip, the bridge, the nostrils, or any combination of these components. In some cases, improvement in your breathing can be obtained and this portion of the procedure may be covered by OHIP.

How is cosmetic rhinoplasty performed?
The best candidates for rhinoplasty are mature individuals with specific concerns regarding the appearance of their nose and have realistic expectations about the results. Dr. Hynes will discuss in detail what can be achieved in your particular case. If you are in good physical health and stable psychologically, you may be a good candidate.
RealSelf Patient Reviews of Nicolas M. Hynes, MD
Specific problems that can be corrected are:
- Overprojecting tip (long or pointed nose)
- Underprojecting tip (short or flat nose)
- Drooping tip
- "Boxy" tip
- Large nostrils
- Dorsal hump
- Wide bridge
- Crooked nose
- Others
How is cosmetic rhinoplasty done?
If improvement in the appearance of the tip is required, the most accurate and safe approach is "open" rhinoplasty. The incisions for open rhinoplasty are mostly hidden inside the nose, but a small incision across the base is made to improve access. This leaves a small scar which is barely visible in most cases. In some cases, no external incision is required.
Once the cartilage and bone of the nose are exposed, careful reshaping of these structures can be performed in order to produce the desired result. The skin is then gently "redraped."
Although cosmetic rhinoplasty can be performed under local anaesthesia, most patients prefer a general anaesthetic. The surgery may take up to four hours.
What are the risks?
All surgery carries risks such as bleeding or infection, but fortunately these are uncommon. Dr. Hynes will review all the risks of rhinoplasty with you in detail during your cosmetic consultation. Occasionally, minor revisions or "touch-ups" are required following rhinoplasty. Most surgeons quote the incidence of revision to be approximately 10%.
