Who is a candidate?

Botox® is a simple, non-surgical treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles in people from 18 to 65 years of age. Botox® is most commonly used to treat frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead lines, and "crow's feet". It can also be used for wrinkles at the base of the nose ("bunny lines") and for some wrinkles around the mouth and neck.

How are Botox® injections performed?

This treatment usually takes less than an hour and consists of a few small injections into the specific muscles that cause frown lines and other wrinkles. Within days, this procedure creates a noticeable improvement in moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. At Lotus, we use Botox® to decrease the severity of facial lines, lines between the brows, forehead lines, and around the eyes (crow’s feet), which are caused by contractions of the delicate underlying facial muscles every time you smile, laugh or frown. The more emotion you show, the deeper these wrinkles and lines are likely to be.

What is the recovery period like?

After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected. Botox® normally takes a few days to work and lasts for 3 to 6 months. Although there can occasionally be some minor bruising or swelling, you can return to your normal activities immediately. People who have repeated injections may notice that the effect lasts longer with subsequent injections.

What are the risks?

There are very few risks associated with Botox® injections and most are quite minor. Transient headache and numbness of the forehead may occur after injection. Bruising and swelling may also result, but these normally last for only a day or two. Temporary drooping of the eyelids has been reported, but in less than 3-5% of injections. Botox® injections are not recommended if you are pregnant or have any neurological diseases.
